Windshield Damage Guide: Can It Be Fixed?
When a rock hits your glass on I-35, the damage usually falls into one of two categories. At Austin Windshields, we want to help you spot the difference so you can act before a small chip becomes a big problem.
Common Types of Damage
Identifying the shape of the break helps us determine the best repair method.
- The Bullseye: A circular break with a dark center. These are very common and usually easy to fix.
- The Star Break: Small cracks radiating from a central point. These can spread fast in the Texas heat and need immediate attention.
- The Half-Moon: Similar to a bullseye but not a full circle. These are also highly repairable.
- Stress Cracks: These start at the edge of the glass without an impact point. They almost always require a full Windshield Replacement.
The “Rule of Thumb” for Repairs
Generally, we can perform a Windshield Repair if the damage meets these criteria.
| Damage Type | Size Limit | Can We Fix It? |
| Chips/Nicks | Smaller than a quarter | Yes |
| Single Cracks | Less than 2 inches long | Usually Yes |
| Multiple Cracks | Less than 2 inches long | Usually Yes |
| Edge Cracks | Within 2 inches of the frame | Usually No |
Why Location Matters
Where the damage is located is just as important as how big it is.
Driver’s Line of Sight: Even a perfect repair leaves a tiny “scar.” For your safety, we usually recommend a replacement if the chip is directly in your field of vision.
The Edge of the Glass: Cracks near the frame weaken the structural integrity of your Laminated Glass. These spread quickly due to the vibration of driving.
Over a Sensor: If the chip is directly over an ADAS camera or sensor, a repair might interfere with your car’s safety tech.
What to Do Immediately
If you notice damage while driving through Round Rock or Pflugerville, follow these steps to keep the repair “clean.”
Cover it: Put a small piece of clear tape over the chip to keep dirt and moisture out.
Avoid the Car Wash: Water and soap can get trapped in the break, making a repair look cloudy.
Park in the Shade: Extreme heat causes the glass to expand, which makes cracks grow.
