First 24 Hours: Critical Care Period

Driving Restrictions

You can drive your vehicle within one hour of installation for local errands and commuting. However, avoid these activities during the first 24 hours:

• Highway driving above 55 mph
• Rough roads with potholes or construction
• Off road driving or unpaved surfaces
• Aggressive acceleration or hard braking

Austin traffic on I-35, Mopac, and Highway 183 creates constant vibration from rough pavement and heavy trucks. These forces stress newly installed windshields. Stick to neighborhood streets and surface roads when possible during the first day.

Door Slamming

Avoid slamming vehicle doors for 24 hours after installation. Door slamming creates pressure waves inside your vehicle cabin. These pressure changes can push against your windshield from inside while adhesive remains partially cured. Close doors gently but firmly.

Window Position

Winter Considerations

Damaged wiper blades with torn rubber or exposed metal frames can scratch new glass. Replace worn wipers before or immediately after windshield installation. Fresh wipers protect your new windshield investment.

Avoid using wipers on dry glass. This creates unnecessary friction that can stress fresh adhesive bonds at windshield edges. Use washer fluid when running wipers during the first few days.

What Sounds Are Normal

New windshield installations sometimes create temporary sounds that concern vehicle owners. These sounds are usually normal and disappear within days:

Creaking or popping: New adhesive settling creates occasional creaks or pops during the first week. Temperature changes cause glass and adhesive to expand and contract. These sounds should diminish after several days.

Wind noise: Slight wind noise during the first day often results from retention tape. Once tape is removed, wind noise should disappear. Persistent wind noise after tape removal may indicate installation issues requiring attention.

Water sounds: If you hear water sloshing inside doors or pillars, this is normal. It is not related to windshield installation. Vehicle drain holes allow water to exit. This is separate from windshield sealing.

When to Schedule ADAS Recalibration

If your vehicle has cameras or sensors mounted behind the windshield for lane keeping, collision warnings, or automatic braking, these systems require recalibration after windshield replacement.

Inspecting Your New Windshield

Clear visibility: Look through windshield from driver seat. Check for distortions, waves, or optical imperfections. Quality OEM glass should provide clear undistorted vision across entire windshield.

Uniform gap: Check gap between windshield edge and vehicle body. This gap should appear consistent all around the windshield perimeter. Uneven gaps may indicate positioning issues.

Adhesive appearance: From inside vehicle, observe adhesive bead visible around windshield edges. It should appear uniform without gaps or thin spots. Excess adhesive squeezed out during installation is normal and will be trimmed.

When can I remove retention tape?
